Dr R.J. Oostdam (1958) has been appointed Professor of Learning and Instruction at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The chair is endowed by the Stichting Hogeschool van Amsterdam.

Ron Oostdam conducts research into how education should deal with differences between pupils, with a special focus on the role of teachers in the educational learning process. A good alignment of the learning situation to the individual learning needs and development opportunities of pupils requires teachers to look at pupils in a new light. Moreover, it demands willingness to align education with the differences between pupils and a critical reflection by teachers on their own role. For teaching in large urban contexts like Amsterdam, this is an important condition for achieving high-quality, effective education which allows pupils to blossom and be happy.

The cooperation between the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA) means that practical research questions can now be incorporated into the scientific research programme of the UvA. Conversely, the outcomes of this scientific research can be shared in educational practice through HvA’s teacher training programmes.

Oostdam has been a professor of Learning and Instruction at the HvA since March 2012. He is also research director of the Knowledge Centre for Teaching and Education of the HvA. Oostdam will join the Research Institute of Child Development and Education at the UvA.

Oostdam has contributed articles to many national and international journals and books. He served as project leader in a number of international projects, including the development of the European System for Diagnostic Language Assessment (DIALANG). He was a member of the organising committee for international conferences in Amsterdam, such as the Stress and Anxiety Research Conference (STAR) and the Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI). Oostdam is a reviewer for a number of international journals. He was co-author of the Programme for Educational Research 2007-2011 of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
