One-day course: From Idea to Impact
Do you believe that your research has societal or commercial potential, but you don’t know how to take the first step? Do you want to know how to convince stakeholders like external organisations or companies to invest in your research?
In this one-day course we will take you through all the steps to bring your idea or research results to the market.
In the morning you will work on developing your idea or research results into an exploitation plan or business case. We will show different models to develop your idea further: What are the benefits? Which problem will you solve for whom? And how do you organise your valorisation activities?
Theory and actively working on the case will be alternated.
You will also get an insight in what stakeholders are looking for, and how you can prepare yourself to enter into dialogue with them. Also how to map and activate your network will be addressed.
Training presentation skills
The afternoon is reserved for a skill training to learn how to get attention for yourself and your idea or research in networking situations. You will be able to practice your elevator pitch with an actor and how to take the initiative in making contact, for instance at a conference, symposium or company. You will learn how to turn (of convert) the inconvenience of a situation into an active approach.
During this day you will meet professionals in the field of entrepreneurship and valorisation and guest speakers from practice. The exchange with other participants will provide inspiration and a learning effect.
How do make your idea more concrete?
Which problem will you solve for whom? And what is necessary to turn your idea into a commercial or societal application? You will work on your own idea with support of experts.
How to create a successful collaboration:
In this session you get an overview of what companies is needed to get societal organisations and companies willing to invest in further research and bring it to the market.
Presentation skills in network situiations:
In this session you will be able to practice with an actor:
- Elevator pitch: your key message in 30 seconds. It helps you to get to the core of your story.
- Making contact: How do you present yourself? It learns you how to take the initiative to contact, for instance at a conference, symposium or company.

The workshop is for all scientists of AMC, HvA, UvA, VU, VUmc. In order to participate in this workshop, it is preferable that you already have a concrete idea. You can submit your idea by filling out the registration form. It is also possible to register with a co-worker to submit a joint idea.
Number of participants
There is room for 18 participants. Participation is free of charge, but given the limited number of places, 'no shows', without timely cancellation, will be charged with the cost of the workshop (€ 200, -). Cancellation is possible until 12 April.
