The Master's programme Theatre Studies engages with the rich histories and legacies of theatre and performance, as well as their entanglements with contemporary social, political and cultural debates. It teaches methods of analysis and study to equip you with the capacity to critically and persuasively reflect about the performing arts.

Theatre Studies at the University of Amsterdam


The Theatre Studies programme at the University of Amsterdam focuses on four key areas: European theatre history and historiography, theatre in education and theatre sociology, applied and community arts research, and contemporary performance theories. It is committed to heightening sensitivities in the discipline to questions around colonialism, race, gender and sexuality, as well as inequalities on a global scale. The programme also offers you rigorous mentorship and sustained guidance in all stages of your individual research. You can also make use of the facilities of the Department of Theatre Studies and its strong ties with cultural venues and practitioners in the city of Amsterdam.

Degree certificate

Theatre Studies is an accredited degree programme of Arts and Culture. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Arts and Culture and the title Master of Arts (MA).
