The present colloquium is the first to focus on the political, social, economic and religious history of the city of Hatra, the spectacular ruins of which are located in the Jazirah in present day Iraq. The fortified desert city belonged to the Parthian Empire for the greater part of its existence (ca. 110-240 AD). Hence the city has great potential for a better understanding of this enigmatic empire and its relationship with the Roman Empire in the West. The colloquium aims at an interdisciplinary approach of the city and various aspects of its history.. Among the invited speakers are archaeologists, ancient historians, art historians, numismatists, historians of religion and epigraphists. The first colloquium on Hatra takes place on 18, 19 and 20 December at the University of Amsterdam.
