The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has been ranked as the top Dutch university according to the 2008 Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) QS World University Rankings Top 200. The UvA is ranked 53rd out of 200 of the best universities in the world. Last year the UvA was in 48th place. The highest ranked schools are Harvard, Yale and Cambridge respectively. As was the case last year, a total of 11 Dutch universities are ranked in the top 200.

The ranking is determined by factors including peer review, academic staff to student ratio, the proportion of international students and academic staff and the number of citations per faculty.
