The Faculty of Humanities is one of the seven faculties at the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). The faculty was established in 1997 after a merger of three faculties: the Faculty of Language and Culture, the Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Philosophy.
The Faculty of Humanities is a broad, classic faculty with a European profile; it has its roots in the city and has international ambitions. It is the largest humanities faculty in the Netherlands with over 6000 students and approximately 1000 employees, including 115 professors (84 regular professors and 31 professors by special appointment or otherwise).
At present the Faculty of Humanities of the UvA is the leading faculty in the Netherlands in the fields of European Studies, Philosophy, Film and Television Studies, Argumentation Studies, Cultural Analysis, Linguistics and several Language and Literature specialisms. While maintaining her prominent position on aforementioned terrain, the Faculty of Humanities endeavours to acquire a similar position in the areas of Golden Age studies, Logic and cognition, European cinema, Media, art and culture and European culture and history.
