Conservation training at the University of Amsterdam

a three fold program

Structure

The programme is embedded in the BA/MA structure. It consists of three steps, the first of which is a conservation minor of 30 ECTS as part of a science or humanities bachelor. The second step is a two-year master in one of the 8 disciplines. In order to obtain the Professional Doctorate in Conservation and Restoration the student has to complete a two-year postgraduate programme (PI). The master's degree also provides the possibility of continuing in a PhD-track.

Location and Collaboration

The UvA is fortunate in being one of the three institutes using the 2008 purpose-built conservation studios of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The combination of the museum studios, the research department of the ICN (Dutch National Heritage Organization) and the UvA teaching studios leads to unprecedented synergies in this new centre of conservation expertise. Additionally, this pro-gramme builds upon the experience of the Foundation for Conservation and Restoration in Maastricht (SRAL), with which we enjoy a continuous and fruitful collaboration.

Training is provided in 8 specialities:

  • book and paper
  • contemporary art
  • furniture and wood
  • glass and ceramics
  • historic interiors
  • metal
  • paintings
  • textile
